All About Leopard Gecko Eating / Leopard Gecko Feeding / Leopard Gecko Diet / Leopard Gecko Food

Crickets

Locusts

Mealworms

Morio Worms

Wax Worms

Calcium and Vitamins

Fresh Water

Crickets

Crickets are a very common feed item for Leopard Geckos. Brown crickets are not very expensive and are a good and healthy feed source for leopard geckos.

In terms of size of Crickets to buy - Look at the size of the head of your Leopard Gecko. You want to buy Crickets that are no longer than your gecko's head is. Usually it's best to buy slightly smaller than the length of your gecko's head to be on the safe side. That way your gecko should be able to swallow down the crickets without issue.

How many should you feed? Throwing in between 5 and 8 at a time to a small, growing Leopard Gecko, once daily. If your Leopard Gecko doesn't zoom round eating them all up within a few hours, maybe reduce the number per day down a little until you find a good balance. For older geckos, perhaps 5-10 every 2 or 3 days will be fine. Keep an eye on the weight of your Leopard Gecko. Possibly take weights once every 2-3 weeks to make sure you are feeding enough.

Locusts

Locusts are a fantastic food source for Leopard Geckos. Price-wise, they can be more expensive to feed than Crickets but a lot of Leopard Geckos love Locusts. They tend to be very popular with your Geckos!

Mealworms

Mealworms are the most common food source for feeding to your Leopard Geckos. Extremely cheap and so long as you keep them in a cool-ish place, they can last for a long time.

In terms of size of Mealworm to buy - Look at the size of the head of your Leopard Gecko. You want to buy Mealworms that are no longer than your gecko's head is. Usually it's best to buy slightly smaller than the length of your gecko's head to be on the safe side. That way your gecko should be able to swallow down the Mealworm without issue.

How many should you feed? Unlike hoping insects such as Crickets and Locusts, Mealworms can be put into a dish, within your gecko's vivarium. There are no hard fast rules about how many to put into the dish but 20-30 is perfectly fine. Mealworms like to eat... There's no harm putting a small amount of well-crushed Weetabix in with your mealworms - even in the dish inside the vivarium. If you want to really make them good and healthy for your leopard geckos, you can also dust your Mealworms with a small amount of Calcium powder & Vitamin D3 - 2 essential items to make sure are available to your gecko to eat.

Morio Worms

Morio worms are kind of like VERY big Mealworms. Morio worms are only suitable for feeding to full grown adult Leopard Geckos as smaller geckos will not be able to cope with the size for swallowing.

How many should you feed? Unlike hoping insects such as Crickets and Locusts, Morio worms can be put into a dish, within your gecko's vivarium. There are no hard fast rules about how many to put into the dish but 4-5 is perfectly fine. Morio worms like to eat... One extra warning: Morio worms can "nip". It doesn't really hurt but be careful if you have to handle them.

Wax Worms

Wax Worms are short, juicy, fat worms. They have an extremely high fat content and really do not have much any nutritional value for your Leopard Gecko at all. However, they can be useful as an occasional treat (once or twice per week).

Calcium and Vitamins

Calcium is absolutely essential to the health of your Leopard Gecko. Without it your Leopard Gecko's bones will begin to be absorbed - causing weak legs, bent legs, bent backs, abnormalities and even death.

Calcium Carbonate powder is very cheap to buy and can be used to dust mealworms and/or can be put in a small dish within your Leopard Gecko's vivarium.

Calcium Carbonate powder requires a special extra vitamin to be available with it before your Leopard Gecko can successfully use the Calcium it eats. Vitamin D3 is the all-important vitamin. Again, this is available in a powder form which can be mixed in with Calcium Powder at a ratio of about 10 parts Calcium to 1 part Vitamin D3. You can also buy ready-made Leopard Gecko vitamin powder mixes which contain both Calcium and vitamin D3 in the correct ratios.

Always make sure your Leopard Geckos have access to a Calcium / Vitamin D3 powder mix to help ensure your Leopard Geckos stay fit and strong.

Fresh Water

Always provide your Leopard Geckos with a good source of fresh water. A small water dish within your Leopard Gecko's vivarium will do fine for this.

Tip away water and clean out the water dish about twice weekly or whenever you see anything in the water that shouldn't be there (some Leopard Geckos decide to use their water dish as a toilet on occasions).
